Even better notes

Notes version 1 was popular. Notes v2 is already set – it is a tiny change allowing you to add links into Notes.

So this is where you can add all the things you’d like to see in Notes v3…

From the v2 we saw requested:

  • Chapter specific notes
  • paragraph specific notes
  • Multiple generic notes

What else would you like?

Assuming that there would be a single note associated with each chapter, I’d like there to be a hotkey that could display the note while writing without opening the navigation bar and taking you out of focus mode. Perhaps that could be a Writing Preference as it may not be to everyone’s taste.

I’d like it to simply appear above the text that I’m working on so that I can check the next scene element without the menu bars distracting me. The same hotkey could then dismiss it.

I love this idea! I tend to get distracted when I have to switch back and forth between tabs/notes. Being able to pull up chapter notes by pressing a hockey and having them pop up asanoverlay would be a great help too reaping the flower writing going.

Additionally, the ability to have it “split screen” and being able to edit writing and notes simultaneously would also be nice. That way as things change while you’re writing you can make a quick annotation in the note and go right back to writing.

I love the split screen idea. I have all of my writing notebooks set up with notes in the side margin and the outline/story on the other part of the page, and being able to look at them both at the same time is incredibly helpful.

I also think having the option for being able to have a different notes page for every chapter or scene would be an amazing help.

Further support for the ability to split the screen in two from Ter-Jaiden on Facebook: I have a possible, little wanted, feature. Given our screens are quite wide, the option to split the page would be wonderful, especially when reviewing your work. Like a toggle to split into two pages/columns so we can fully utilise our available space.

Would anyone else like an option to have the first few lines of the chapter-specific note appear below the chapter title in the left sidebar?

That could help with outlining. I’ve tried typing long chapter titles, but as they’re all bold (and you have to type in a single line edit field) it’s not really satisfactory.

I’d see this as a toggle that you could switch on and off in Writing Preferences.

I would like the ability to create multiple notes for the entire book or the ability to have tabs in the notes for easy organization.

How about being able to highlight a specific portion of text and assign a note to it, similar to how you can in Kindle books?

Yes, PLEEEEASE allow us to attach notes to specific things in the text. This is a feature I use in Scrivener all the time, so much that I can’t really live without it. Word’s “comments” and Google Docs’ “comments” are also linked to specific places in the text, so IMHO this is vital. Thanks!

Absolutely, as the minimalist aspects of Novlr are the most attractive thing to me (and I imagine others). All of these features are great, but they need to have the option of not interfering with the display.

Assigning notes to specific words/lines of highlighted text, like Word’s Comments, would be, in my opinion, more helpful than any notes feature yet. The general note sections are great, but notes can be composed anywhere. I actually keep more notes in a physical notebook than Novlr’s notes section. However, when there are notes/questions that need to be raised in regard to a specific detail you put in a paragraph (i.e. Didn’t I use this expression in an earlier chapter?), you really need the note attached to those words so you don’t have to go hunting down the context again later.

I agree though, that the minimal design is nice, so maybe the note could be enlarged/minimized via a hyperlinked superscript (note 1, 2, 3, etc.)

Thanks for your comment Daniel. It’s good to know that this would be useful in Novlr. We will be introducing multiple notes soon, but being able to add notes to specific words/lines/paragraphs could also be a great feature!

    Suggestion via email from Christina…
    – One thing that might be cool to have would be some kind of “plot bunny”/random prompt-type feature for inspiration.

I would like to see the ability to add new notes like you can new chapters. You could name them after characters, locations, plot ideas, etc. Similar to what Jenna was asking for, but also the ability to tie a note section to a specific chapter. (ie you could assign your note “Story for Chapter One” to “Chapter One”.

I would like to see notes that are quite generic. A place I can just jot something down that may be completely unrelated to the story and file it away without having to remember which story that unrelated thought went with.

Hi Heather, Thanks for the suggestion. That’ a good idea to have a completely separate notes page (maybe for a future storyline!)

Email suggestion from Clayton: Ability to keep separate notes as marked by a special icon on a given page and yet view side by side notes to that page or notes from a particular page. This would help in referencing factual or inspirational material to a given page, pages or chapters.

    Create and maintain footnotes

View footnotes from one page side by side of another page

Email suggestion from Alex: Marks in general that you can place throughout the chapter. They’ll serve as reminder to revisit certain things.

Some way to attach an image to the notes would be great. I sometimes save images for reference/inspiration or draw out things related to the story. For example I was sketching out the floor plan of the characters apartment last night so I could make sense of it for what I was writing. I wouldn’t really need a drawing option in novlr, but a way to attach an image in or as a note would be good.

Thanks MG, we think it would be a great feature and very useful for writers so will definitely look into this – It would also work in the timeline/planning/outlining tool to be able to add pictures and create a storyboard type feature 🙂

Yes, just a place to store attachements in general would be better. I’ve got a few stories with associated files. Pictures, mp3s, and pdfs of research. So I think James’ idea is better than mine.

    Facebook suggestions from Don –
    – Make the notepad something that could be pulled into / out of the work area as needed – so if I needed to glance at a note, I could do so rather than having to completely disrupt my flow on writing.
    – Allowing multiple tiered pages – you can define how granular the sub-layers could go – more than three would be problematic. Allow the user to set up their own system, but offer templates for character, location, object.

I have a bunch of backstory notes for the novel I am working on right now. Currently, they take up three different documents, each serving a different purpose. Instead of lumping all my notes together on a single, disorganized page, I’d much prefer to separate them into three separate “notes documents.” If this is what you mean by “multiple generic notes,” then we’re definitely “on the same page.”

Hi Luke, yeah it would be great to have the option for multiple notes in one novel as you say, many users have got notes they want separated from others. Others have suggested chapter specific notes which could also be a good idea 🙂

I think someone already said multiple notes I think my only other suggestion, and not sure if that was brought up yet but would be two type of notepads, the generic one where it’s a blank space for you to write but a second simple spreadsheet type would be great too. Nothing fancy but in the same vein as the Google Sheets where you’ve got a full grid (in which you can adjust the size of each grid) to play with. Offers a different way of plotting (say the JK Rowling sort). Though I imagine this wouldn’t be too easy to implement.

Biggest want is definitely multiple notes, look forward to that.

I’d say chapter- or scene-specific notes is a need. However, since you lose your place in the chapter once you leave it to look at notes (or other chapters), I’ve taken to keeping notes in a separate program altogether, that way I don’t need to find my place again (more of a problem when you’re in the editing stage, and not just writing at the bottom of the page). If you could make it so Novlr remembers where you last had your cursor in a chapter, and automatically reopens to that spot, it’d make the notes feature more useful to me. Maybe the location could be auto-cleared once you’ve gone to more than one additional location since you left said chapter, so you can still read through later on without always having to scroll to the top.
